U.S. Navy expands regional ship maintenance in Indo-Pacific

The U.S. Navy is increasingly relying on regional maintenance and repair facilities to support the 7th Fleet in the Indo-Pacific. This strategic shift follows an incident in July where the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Benfold experienced a power failure in the South China Sea, necessitating an emergency tow to Subic Bay, Philippines, for repairs.

By utilizing foreign shipyards and maintenance centers, the U.S. Navy gains operational flexibility near potential conflict zones. This approach helps mitigate declining domestic shipbuilding capacity and overcomes the geographic challenges of maintaining a large forward-deployed force. Key regional hubs include the Ship Repair Facility and Regional Maintenance Center (SRF-JRMC) headquartered in Yokosuka, Japan, with additional branches in Sasebo, Japan, and Changi, Singapore. The capabilities of allies such as Japan and South Korea remain vital to these strategic maritime operations.
