USS John Basilone arrives in Rota to bolster NATO missile shield

The USS John Basilone (DDG 122), an advanced Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, has arrived at the joint US-Spanish naval base in Rota, Spain. This deployment marks the arrival of the sixth American destroyer assigned to bolster the NATO missile shield in Europe.

Following a June 2022 agreement between Spain and the United States, the missile defense presence was expanded from four to six destroyers. The USS John Basilone, which recently transferred its homeport from Naval Station Mayport, Florida, is equipped with the advanced AEGIS combat system. Its mission involves providing integrated air and missile defense across a strategic area spanning from the Eastern Mediterranean to the European and African Atlantic flanks.

US Ambassador Benjamin León Jr. emphasized that the addition of the sixth destroyer increases operational flexibility and strengthens NATO's deterrent capabilities. Despite recent political tensions regarding defense spending and international policy, officials noted that the military-to-military relationship in Rota remains stable and focused on regional security challenges.
