U.S. Navy leaders consider haircut allowances for sailors

During a live town hall at Fort George G. Meade, a sailor questioned U.S. Navy leadership regarding whether the service would provide financial compensation or allowances to cover the costs of stricter grooming standards. The sailor noted that the Pentagon’s increased focus on grooming, combined with rising prices, could cost sailors $600 or more annually.

Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Daryl Caudle acknowledged the suggestion, stating he had not previously considered it. While noting that some personal expenses are typically out-of-pocket for service members, Caudle suggested exploring the integration of more barber shop facilities at shore assignments to help alleviate costs. Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy John Perryman also called the proposal a “fair suggestion” and indicated it would be reviewed.

The discussion occurred amidst broader concerns regarding Navy retention, quality of life, and the effects of extended ship deployments supporting operations against Iran.
