US Navy P-8A Poseidon conducts Black Sea maritime surveillance

A US Navy Boeing P-8A Poseidon aircraft conducted a maritime surveillance mission over the western Black Sea, operating east of Varna, Bulgaria. The aircraft arrived in Varna on October 18 after departing from NAS Sigonella in Italy. Flight tracking data indicates that portions of the mission were flown at altitudes below 2,700 meters, a profile consistent with maritime patrol and surveillance rather than signal intelligence (SIGINT).

The deployment follows increased security concerns in the Black Sea region after several commercial vessels were targeted by drones in early October. Reports indicate that four commercial ships were attacked within Bulgaria's exclusive economic zone, with two vessels sinking and 21 sailors reported missing.

Bulgarian President Rumen Radev stated that Bulgaria has requested increased aerial surveillance and air defense capabilities from NATO allies to bolster regional security. While the P-8A Poseidon is capable of various intelligence roles, it is specifically designed for maritime patrol, anti-submarine warfare, and tracking surface vessels.
