US Navy P-8A Poseidon conducts Black Sea maritime surveillance

A US Navy Boeing P-8A Poseidon aircraft conducted a maritime surveillance mission over the western Black Sea, operating within Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone. The aircraft, bearing registration number 170269, performed several extended circular flights in international waters east of the Bulgarian coast.

According to analysis from Itamilradar, the flight profile indicates a maritime surveillance mission rather than electronic intelligence gathering. The primary objective is to monitor sea traffic and identify potential threats to commercial shipping, which faces increased risks from Russian drone attacks. These attacks have specifically targeted vessels on routes connecting Ukrainian ports to the wider Black Sea transport network.

This mission is part of an expanded presence of US and NATO aircraft in the western Black Sea basin. Recent regional activity has also included flights by Italian Air Force CAEW early-warning and control aircraft. The heightened surveillance follows reports of drone strikes against merchant ships, including a recent incident involving the container ship Contship Jet near Cape Kaliakra.
