U.S. Navy Reinstates Flu Vaccine Requirement for Recruits and Deploying Sailors

The United States Navy has reversed the Pentagon’s April decision that made annual influenza vaccinations optional for service members. A new Navy administrative message (NAVADMIN) restores a mandatory flu‑shot requirement for specific groups, including recruits entering boot camp, personnel in officer accession programs such as Officer Candidate School and the Naval Academy, sailors deploying to areas with influenza activity, reservists serving in chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear response roles, health‑care workers, and certain civilian employees in child‑development programs. The order takes effect immediately, with required vaccination by 15 January 2027 and provisions for religious and medical exemptions.

The policy change follows a severe flu outbreak that hit an Air Force basic‑training base in Texas in June, sickening hundreds of recruits and resulting in a trainee death. Earlier in April, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had announced that flu shots would be optional across the military, citing “medical autonomy.” The Navy’s reinstatement reflects concerns about disease spread in close‑quarter training environments and aims to protect force readiness.
