US Navy seeks contractors for $15 billion Puget Sound shipyard project
The US Navy is seeking contractors for a major infrastructure project at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility in Bremerton, Washington. The project involves building a new multi-mission dry dock and associated waterfront infrastructure.
The indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contract has a maximum aggregate value of $15 billion over a five-year base period, with an option for an additional five years. The Navy expects to select approximately five contractors, with major task orders estimated to range between $2 billion and $6 billion.
The new pressure-relieved dry dock is intended to support repair work for Ford- and Nimitz-class aircraft carriers, as well as various surface ships and submarines. The project is divided into four primary packages: marine works ($2 billion–$3 billion), the dry dock construction ($3.5 billion–$4.5 billion), infrastructure ($3.5 billion–$4.5 billion), and the fabrication and delivery of the caisson ($200 million–$300 million).
Contract awards are anticipated in 2027, with major dry dock construction expected to begin around 2030. The Puget Sound facility remains the only shipyard on the US West Coast with a dry dock capable of handling nuclear-powered aircraft carriers.
