The U.S. Navy has successfully completed a developmental test of the Harpoon Coastal Defense System (HCDS), achieving a direct hit on a target vessel. Conducted at the Point Mugu Sea Range, the test validated the system’s ability to launch Harpoon missiles from land to engage maritime threats in near-shore or littoral waters.

The Boeing-manufactured system is a critical component of a $2.3 billion procurement deal intended for Taiwan’s military. The contract includes 100 launchers and 400 RGM-84L-4 Harpoon Block II missiles, which will be fielded by the Republic of China Navy’s Littoral Combat Command to protect strategic waterways and coastal assets.

This successful live-fire event marks the first phase of a two-stage developmental testing process. The second phase will involve additional at-sea, live-fire, and tracking events to further assess combat readiness and system enhancements before full deployment.
