The U.S. Navy has announced the development of a new next-generation air-to-air missile, the AIM-424 Long Range Air-to-Air Missile (LRAAM), nicknamed ‘MALICE’. Announced on August 22, the weapon is designed to engage enemy aircraft and drones at extreme distances, aiming to increase pilot survivability and protect aircraft carriers and fleets from over-the-horizon threats.

The missile features a range exceeding 250 nautical miles (approximately 287 statute miles). It is significantly larger than standard medium-range missiles, measuring 13.5 feet in length and weighing 1,500 pounds. The Navy stated that the LRAAM is intended to provide aviators with greater reach, tactical flexibility, and a ‘first look, first shot, first kill’ advantage in aerial combat.
