US Navy warships arrive at Guantanamo Naval Base

Two US Navy littoral combat ships, the USS Billings and the USS Minneapolis-Saint Paul, have arrived at the Guantanamo Naval Base in Cuba. The USS Billings arrived as part of a scheduled Caribbean deployment, while the USS Minneapolis-Saint Paul arrived on Monday following its departure from Naval Base Mayport, Florida, on August 27.

These vessels are designed for shallow coastal-water operations to address threats such as coastal mines, terrorism, and stealth submarines. Their arrival follows a period of increased diplomatic and military activity between the United States and Cuba. Recent developments include meetings between CIA Director John Ratcliffe and Cuban officials, as well as a visit from Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, who warned Cuba against acquiring weapons capable of reaching US territory.

Additionally, the military presence in the region has expanded through Operation Southern Lance. This SOUTHCOM deployment involves more than 8,100 troops conducting exercises at the Roosevelt Roads naval base in Puerto Rico, representing a projected $79 million investment.
