Washington rally defends voting rights amid shootings and rising rents

Thousands of civil rights advocates, students, and union members gathered at the Lincoln Memorial for the March on Washington 2026 “Defend the Vote” demonstration. Held on the 63rd anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, the rally called on lawmakers to protect voting access and reverse recent legislative rollbacks.

In separate news, mass shootings in Chicago and Trenton, New Jersey, resulted in three deaths and 18 injuries. In Chicago, gunfire in Washington Park left one person dead and several others hospitalized. In Trenton, a shooting in a residential neighborhood killed at least two people and injured nine.

Additionally, U.S. median asking rents have increased by 2.3%, reaching nearly $2,000 per month, as landlords regain market leverage.
