U.S. Northern Command intercepts over 300 drones at Mexico border

U.S. Northern Command has announced the interception of more than 300 drones along the U.S.-Mexico border since the beginning of 2026. These unmanned aerial vehicles are linked to transnational criminal organizations and drug cartels engaged in illegal activities.

Military reports indicate a significant escalation in drone usage, with approximately 100 drones downed in August alone. Criminal groups utilize this technology for various purposes, including smuggling narcotics and monitoring the movements of law enforcement and military personnel along the border.

Mexican Defense Minister Ricardo Treviño noted that migrant smugglers specifically use drones to scout for security gaps and unmonitored border locations to facilitate illegal crossings. Beyond surveillance and smuggling, these drones have been used for direct attacks; in October, an explosive-laden drone targeted the prosecutor's office in Tijuana, causing property damage but no casualties.
