US nuclear regulators propose sweeping rule changes to accelerate deployment
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is undergoing a significant regulatory overhaul aimed at accelerating the deployment of nuclear power. Following an executive order from President Donald Trump, the NRC is reviewing a massive set of proposed rules designed to simplify the building and operation of plants. These reforms include reducing reporting requirements for non-emergency events, eliminating expiration dates for standard reactor design approvals, and increasing staffing flexibility in control rooms.
The administration's policy goal is to quadruple the nation's commercial nuclear reactor fleet by 2050. This push comes as the government seeks to increase electricity generation capacity.
In a related development, Holtec International has reached a major regulatory milestone for its Pioneer project in southwest Michigan. The company submitted a Preliminary Safety Analysis Report to the NRC, completing the final filing phase for a construction permit application. The project involves two SMR-300 small modular reactors at the Palisades Energy Campus in Covert Township, which are expected to provide 680 megawatts of low-carbon electricity to the regional grid.
