US nuclear weapons spending exceeds that of other eight nuclear powers combined

A report by the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) says the nine nuclear‑armed states invested a total of $119 billion (about €102 billion) in their arsenals in 2025, a 19 % increase over the previous year. The spending rate works out to roughly €3,200 each second, continuously throughout the year.

The United States accounted for more than the combined outlays of the other eight nuclear powers, highlighting a sharp divergence in nuclear investment. ICAN, the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize laureate that championed the UN nuclear‑weapon ban treaty, warned that a single day’s spending could feed two million people. The organization criticised the ongoing modernization and expansion of nuclear stockpiles despite the Nuclear Non‑Proliferation Treaty’s call for gradual disarmament.
