US official says acquiring Greenland is only viable solution

A senior U.S. government official speaking to journalists at the NATO summit in Ankara said that the United States sees the acquisition of Greenland as the only way to address long‑term security risks around the ice‑covered island, which belongs to the Kingdom of Denmark. He added that “we remain of the view that this is the best way to meet NATO’s defence needs regarding Greenland.” The official cited intense naval activity in the region and the threat posed by Russia and China as reasons for the proposal. Earlier this year President Donald Trump publicly threatened to take the strategically important Arctic island, prompting strong objections from Denmark, Greenland and other NATO partners. Both Denmark and Greenland have firmly rejected any U.S. annexation and have begun diplomatic talks with the Trump administration to seek a compromise, while the United States says it is also examining alternative options.
