US Officials Address Student Loan Risks and Propose Outcomes-Based Financing Reform
Federal regulators, led by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), warned that college students face aggressive marketing for credit cards, personal loans and refinancing offers that often carry hidden fees and high interest. The agency highlighted the pressure of rising living costs and academic demands, urging students to scrutinize terms, compare multiple offers and rely on campus financial‑aid offices or official government resources to avoid predatory lending.
In response to a growing financing gap for graduates, a bipartisan group of lawmakers introduced the Outcomes‑Based Financing for Students Act. The bill would link loan repayment obligations to borrowers' post‑graduation earnings, capping payments at 20 % of income and providing additional safeguards for low‑income borrowers. It also requires clear disclosures and aims to expand innovative, income‑contingent financing options for students and workforce‑training programs across the United States.
