US security officials advise states on potential election interference

A group of approximately ten current and former US national security officials, many with experience in the Department of Defense, is privately advising state governments and congressional lawmakers on preparing for the November 3 midterm elections. The group is providing consultancy to help jurisdictions prepare for potential interference by the Trump administration that could undermine electoral integrity.

These private consultations have involved officials from ten states, including governors, election administrators, and members of both the House and Senate. The discussions focus on states where closely contested races could determine control of Congress. The officials emphasize that their efforts are not motivated by political bias but by concerns regarding the protection of democratic processes.

Simultaneously, Democratic leaders, led by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Representative Joe Morelle, are developing defensive strategies. They have identified over 150 potential threats, including the possible deployment of Department of Homeland Security (DHS), National Guard, or Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents at polling stations, which Human Rights Watch has warned could intimidate voters. Other concerns include the use of AI-generated fake videos to simulate election fraud.
