Democratic Representatives Jamie Raskin and Jim Himes have formally requested that FBI Director Kash Patel cancel a planned trip to Russia. In a letter dated October 9, the lawmakers cited ‘urgent national security concerns’ regarding the potential visit.

The proposed trip, which was reported by Politico in July, would reportedly involve visits to Moscow and Saint Petersburg around October 14, with the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) serving as the host. The congressmen described Russia as a ‘hostile foreign power,’ pointing to its history of espionage against U.S. officials, cyberattacks on critical infrastructure, and interference in American elections.

Concerns were also raised regarding the expansion of FBI cooperation with Russian and Chinese law enforcement agencies under Patel’s leadership. The timing of the potential visit has drawn scrutiny, occurring shortly after President Donald Trump signed sanctions against Russia. Simultaneously, Trump announced an agreement for Russia to supply millions of tons of diesel fuel to the United States and global markets.
