US officials' Greenland remarks fuel European anxiety

U.S. Ambassador to the European Union Andrew Paxton told participants at the Brussels Economic Security Forum that President Donald Trump’s talk of a possible invasion of Greenland had been misinterpreted. Paxton said, “It was interpreted that we threatened the territorial integrity of Greenland, but the president never said we would invade,” adding that Trump’s comments were meant only to draw attention to the island’s strategic importance.

At the same time, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warned Europe of an “invasion” of dangerous ideologies, citing boats and men arriving on the beaches of Spain, Italy, Greece and Bulgaria. He said, “Europe faces an invasion of dangerous ideologies…,” and criticized European capitals for failing to act on immigration and security challenges. Both statements underscore heightened U.S. rhetoric about Arctic strategy and European security concerns.
