United States investigates nationwide suspicious mailings to officials
Federal authorities, including the FBI, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and the U.S. Capitol Police, are investigating a wave of suspicious mailings sent to congressional offices and election officials across the United States. As of Friday, at least 36 members of Congress from both Democratic and Republican parties reported receiving suspicious letters, some containing unidentified white or brown powdery substances.
Incidents have prompted office evacuations and temporary closures in several locations, including offices in California, Minnesota, South Dakota, and New York. Notable recipients include Senators Chuck Schumer, Ted Cruz, Amy Klobuchar, and Susan Collins, as well as several House members. In Minnesota, the Secretary of State’s office reported receiving a mailing containing both a threatening letter and an unidentified white powder.
While some envelopes bore a postmark or return address linked to the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), the group stated they have not occupied that specific location since 2013. There have been no reported injuries, and in at least five instances, the substances were determined to be non-hazardous. Investigators are working to identify the sender and intercept further mailings as the investigation continues.
