U.S. monitors Chinese research vessels in the Arctic near Alaska
The United States is closely monitoring Chinese research vessels operating in the Arctic near Alaska. Rear Admiral Bob Little, commander of the U.S. Coast Guard’s Arctic District, reported that four Chinese vessels have operated in the region so far in 2026, compared to five during the entirety of 2025.
These vessels have navigated through maritime areas including the Aleutian Islands and the Bering Strait, with some activity reaching as far north as the North Pole. While the ships have remained in international waters, U.S. officials noted they failed to provide advance diplomatic notification of their presence, which is standard protocol.
Washington has expressed two primary concerns regarding these missions. First, there is apprehension that the scientific research could serve as a cover for seabed mineral exploitation in areas where the U.S. claims rights. Second, officials worry the data collected could provide China with a military advantage or pose a direct security threat through intelligence and surveillance capabilities.
