U.S. oil and gas rig count remains unchanged at 588

The total oil and gas rig count in the United States remained unchanged at 588 for the week ending August 28, according to reports from Baker Hughes. While the overall count held steady, there was a shift in focus between energy types: oil rigs decreased by five to a total of 447, while gas rigs increased by five to 132.

In North America, the total rig count saw a decline of eight units, bringing the regional total to 804. In Canada, the rig count fell by three units to 216, though this remains 36 units higher than the same period last year.

Regional activity in the U.S. showed mixed results. The Permian Basin's rig count remained stable at 267. Texas reported an increase in activity, with its rig count rising to 281 or 282, marking its highest level since February 2025. Conversely, counts in New Mexico and Louisiana both saw decreases of three rigs.
