US Open influencers spark debate over tennis etiquette
The 2026 US Open has sparked a debate over tennis etiquette following disruptions caused by social media influencers and content creators. To reach new audiences, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) doubled the number of accredited creators to approximately 100 this year.
Several incidents have drawn criticism from professional players. During Naomi Osaka’s first-round match, chair umpire Kader Nouni had to interrupt play to reprimand a group in a luxury suite for filming videos and using ring lights. Osaka emphasized that spectators must respect the sport, stating, “If you come to a sporting event, you have to respect the sport.”
American player Jessica Pegula also described some behaviors, such as the use of selfie lights, as “disrespectful,” noting that athletes are performing for their careers. While Coco Gauff expressed support for a more diverse audience, the tension between digital engagement and traditional match decorum remains a central issue at the tournament.
In addition to the etiquette debate, Naomi Osaka has drawn significant attention for her fashion choices, including a tribute to Allen Iverson and high-fashion ensembles styled by Law Roach. On the court, Osaka advanced to the third round after defeating Katerina Siniakova, while Madison Keys also secured a comeback victory.
