US Open features Zheng Qinwen's return and Williams sisters' reunion

The 2026 US Open women's singles tournament features notable storylines involving recovery and veteran returns. Chinese star and Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen has successfully navigated the qualifying rounds to enter the main draw following elbow surgery that caused her to miss previous major tournaments. Zheng is set to face 16-year-old Kristina Liutova in the first round.

In a significant reunion, American legends Venus Williams and Serena Williams will compete together in the women's doubles event, marking their first Grand Slam appearance as a duo since 2022. Venus Williams, 46, also received a wildcard for the singles competition, where she will face Sofia Kenin in the opening round.

Meanwhile, Taiwan's Joanna Garland's run in the qualifying rounds ended in the final stage. Facing the third seed Francesca Jones, Garland lost in straight sets, 4-6, 1-6, preventing her from advancing to the main draw.
