The 2024 U.S. Open returns to Shinnecock Hills, the only course to host the major in three different centuries. The tournament, scheduled for June 18‑21, will be the sixth time the historic Long Island venue stages the event. Organisers have widened fairways to an average of 48 yards and plan slower green speeds to balance the traditional difficulty that has produced famously tough tests in 2004, 2018 and earlier editions.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler enters seeking the final leg of the career Grand Slam; a victory would make him the seventh player to win all four majors and the first to do so on his first attempt since the modern era began in 1960. Scheffler and other contenders, including Rory McIlroy, have noted the course changes and hope the setup respects the original William Flynn design.

Irish influence permeates the championship. Sean Quinlivan, a Kerry native, serves his fifth year as head professional at Shinnecock Hills, overseeing practice facilities for the field. Irish golfers and caddies, from veteran Pádraig Harrington to younger players such as Nick Taylor, are also prominent, underscoring Ireland’s lasting impact on the sport.
