US Open mixed doubles: Alcaraz and Williams advance to quarterfinals

The US Open mixed doubles competition has seen significant upsets and high-profile debuts. Carlos Alcaraz and Serena Williams secured a victory in their first round, defeating Erin Routliffe and Lloyd Glasspool 5-3, 4-1. This match marked Alcaraz’s return to competition following a four-month wrist injury and Williams’ first appearance at the US Open since 2022. The duo is set to face Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli in the quarterfinals.

In another major upset, the unseeded pairing of Katerina Siniakova and Henry Patten eliminated the top-seeded duo of Aryna Sabalenka and Novak Djokovic. After trailing 1-4 in the first set, Siniakova and Patten rallied to win 1-4, 4-2, and 10-2 in a super tiebreak. Siniakova and Patten will next compete against the married pair of Elina Svitolina and Gael Monfils.

The tournament follows a revamped format designed to attract top singles players, featuring a $1 million prize for the winning team and a shorter scoring system. Other notable results include Gael Monfils and Elina Svitolina advancing to the semifinals after defeating Katerina Siniakova and Henry Patten in a previous round.
