US Open Mixed Doubles Wild‑Card Selections Challenge Top Players
The U.S. Open announced a preliminary entry list of 29 teams for the revamped mixed doubles event, but only 16 spots are available in the main draw. Six teams qualify automatically based on combined singles rankings, including the top‑ranked pair of Aryna Sabalenka and Novak Djokovic and the duo of Elena Rybakina and Taylor Fritz. Eight wild‑card slots will be awarded by the USTA, and two additional places are earned through an eight‑team qualifying draw.
With many high‑profile players such as Frances Tiafoe, Tommy Paul, Jessica Pegula and Venus Williams unlikely to qualify directly, the USTA faces difficult decisions on which wild cards to grant. Other notable entries include the Japanese pair Naomi Osaka and Kei Nishikori, married couples Elina Svitolina‑Gael Monfils and Katie Boulter‑Alex de Minaur, and the possibility of late‑season pairings like Ben Shelton with a top‑20 women’s player. The first Italian team was confirmed as Lorenzo Musetti partnering former partner of Jannik Sinner, Anna Kalinskaya.
