U.S. Open players call for influencer etiquette rules

Professional tennis players are calling for better regulation of social media influencers at the U.S. Open following disruptions during matches. During Naomi Osaka’s first-round match against Anastasia Zakharova, play had to be interrupted because a group of content creators in a VIP lounge was being excessively noisy and using bright ring lights to film videos.

Osaka noted that while she does not have an issue with influencers promoting the sport to new audiences, attendees must respect the etiquette of the game. She highlighted that the noise was a significant distraction for both players.

Other top players also weighed in on the issue. Jessica Pegula described the behavior as “a bit disrespectful” to the athletes who are performing for their careers. Coco Gauff suggested that the tournament could implement clearer signage in suites to educate creators on proper etiquette, noting that some may be attending their first tennis match and are unaware of the rules.
