US Open qualifying: Garín and Barrios advance as Argentines exit

The US Open qualifying rounds are underway, featuring significant results for Chilean and Argentine players. Chilean tennis players Cristian Garín and Tomás Barrios have both advanced to the final round of qualifying. Barrios secured his spot by defeating Argentina’s Genaro Olivieri 6-3, 6-1, while Garín overcame Sweden’s Elias Ymer with a 6-2, 7-6 scoreline. Both players are now one win away from entering the main draw.

In contrast, the Argentine contingent faced setbacks in the qualifying stages. Following Olivieri’s loss, no Argentine players remain in the qualifying bracket. However, thirteen Argentine players have already secured spots in the main draw, including Francisco Cerúndolo, Tomás Etcheverry, and Sebastián Báez.

In Winston-Salem, Juan Manuel Cerúndolo advanced to the quarterfinals after Sebastián Báez withdrew from their match due to physical issues while Cerúndolo led 6-2, 4-0. Báez’s withdrawal has raised concerns regarding his physical condition ahead of the US Open.
