U.S. Peace Corps volunteers sworn in for service in Guyana

Twenty‑eight volunteers of the 37th Peace Corps cohort were sworn in during a ceremony in Georgetown, marking the start of a two‑year assignment across Guyana. U.S. Ambassador to Guyana Nicole Theriot praised the volunteers, noting that since 1961 more than 1,100 Americans have served in the country, co‑teaching over 3,000 science lessons with 168 teachers, establishing school libraries and training hundreds of educators.

Peace Corps Country Director Christie Scott and volunteers such as Grace Brigham highlighted the program’s focus on education, health and environmental projects. The volunteers begin their work as Guyana copes with the recent MV Barima tragedy, with the ambassador emphasizing the importance of community solidarity and the lasting impact of the volunteers’ contributions.
