US Pentagon blacklist sparks China protest over scientific research ties

The United States Department of Defense added a number of Chinese research institutions, including Fudan University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, to a list of foreign entities deemed to be engaged in "problematic activities." Beijing’s Ministry of Commerce responded with a formal statement expressing "strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition," accusing Washington of "overstretching the concept of national security" and turning scientific cooperation into a political weapon.

Chinese officials warned that the expanded blacklist would damage global innovation and hinder future collaborations between U.S. and Chinese scientists. The ministry urged the United States to correct the measure, provide fair treatment to the listed institutions, and avoid discriminatory barriers that undermine international scientific exchange.
