US Pentagon adds ‘Overseas Operations’ casualty category for Iran war
The U.S. Department of Defense announced that its Defense Casualty Analysis System has created a new “Overseas Operations” category after the end of Operation Epic Fury. Four soldiers killed in July 2026 and dozens of wounded were removed from the official Iran‑war tally and placed in this separate list, bringing the reported total of wounded to 642 troops. The official death count for the Iran conflict was earlier listed as 18, then reduced to 14, with the four removed soldiers re‑classified under the new category that covers actions after 7 July 2026.
Pentagon spokespeople said the change resulted from “anomalies” and “temporary data disruptions,” not an attempt to conceal casualties. Critics disputed this, with Rep. Thomas Massie calling the split an “absurd list,” and veteran Tanya Stamos describing the reduction as “disgusting and demoralising.” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth attributed the revisions to temporary data disturbances on the Pentagon website.
The four soldiers killed were three in Jordan (July 17) and one in Iraq (July 18). Civilian toll estimates from the International Committee of the Red Cross exceed 1,900 deaths and 20,000 injuries since the war began. Separate FOIA‑based data show over 400 U.S. casualties in the first six weeks, including a day with 70 wounded, and a reported rise in wounded to 624—a one‑third increase in a short period.
