US pet industry sees growth in cat ownership and services
The pet industry is seeing a significant shift in consumer behavior, with cat ownership and spending rising even as some grocery and fuel costs impact household budgets. According to the American Pet Products Association, cat ownership increased by 5% in 2025, with an estimated 53 million households owning cats. This trend is attributed to the relative affordability of cat care and their suitability for smaller living spaces like apartments.
Major companies including General Mills, Chewy, and Petco Health and Wellness Co. have identified the cat segment as a business strength. General Mills reported double-digit growth in cat food sales, while noting a decline in dog food sales.
Beyond product sales, the pet services sector is expanding. US pet owners spent $14.3 billion on grooming, boarding, training, and other non-veterinary services in 2025, a figure projected to reach $14.9 billion in 2026. Total US pet industry spending reached $158 billion in 2025, up 3.7% from the previous year. Additionally, the number of owned cats in the US rose from 58.4 million in 2016 to 76.3 million in 2025.
