US political candidates prepare for general elections in Michigan and California

Political contests in Michigan and California are shaping the landscape for upcoming general elections. In Michigan, progressive Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has advanced to face Republican Mike Rogers following a primary victory over Rep. Haley Stevens. Other notable Michigan races include Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson running against Rep. John James for governor, and Christina Bertrand Hines winning the Democratic primary for District 10 in the U.S. House.

In California’s 22nd Congressional District, a highly contested swing seat, Democratic candidate Randy Villegas is challenging Republican incumbent Rep. David Valadao. Villegas, a local school board member, has centered his campaign on progressive platforms such as Medicare for All, particularly targeting the high percentage of district residents enrolled in Medicaid. The race follows a 2024 election where Donald Trump won the district by 1.9 points.
