US political developments: redistricting risks, trade tensions, and Supreme Court ruling

The Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC) has warned that Republicans risk losing future redistricting battles due to insufficient investment in state legislative races. A finance memo indicates that Democratic groups are projected to outspend the RSLC’s $50 million commitment by nearly three-to-one, potentially impacting the 2028 House majority and the 2030 census redistricting process.

In a separate development, public opinion has turned against President Trump’s rebranding of Lake Ontario as ‘Lake America.’ A poll shows 46 percent of Americans oppose the name change, while only 20 percent support it. This move follows the collapse of trade negotiations with Canada, resulting in a trade war characterized by 50 percent tariffs on $20 billion of Canadian goods and retaliatory levies from Ottawa.

Additionally, the Supreme Court issued a 5-4 ruling allowing the Trump administration to proceed with construction of a White House ballroom project for the time being. The decision stays lower court rulings that would have halted the project. Chief Justice John Roberts dissented, stating that the construction is ‘likely unlawful’ and that the ruling was ‘no victory for the separation of powers.’
