FBI headquarters relocation to D.C. blocked by federal judge
A federal judge has blocked the Trump administration's attempt to relocate the FBI headquarters to the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, D.C. U.S. District Judge Theodore Chuang ruled that the administration's decision to scrap a previously approved plan to build a new facility in Greenbelt, Maryland, was illegal and not in accordance with federal law.
The ruling follows a lawsuit filed by the state of Maryland and Prince George’s County. The plaintiffs argued that the administration improperly overrode a 2023 decision by the General Services Administration (GSA) to select the Greenbelt site. Judge Chuang also found that the reprogramming of $555 million in funds—including $323 million specifically appropriated by Congress for the Maryland project—was “arbitrary and capricious.”
The FBI has criticized the decision, claiming the court is intervening for political reasons and undermining efforts to make government more cost-effective. However, Maryland officials, including Attorney General Anthony Brown, stated the ruling clears the path to return the project to Greenbelt, protecting the economic benefits promised to the region.
