US Voters Favor Democrats on Economy as Trump Approval Drops to 35%

A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted online nationwide from July 29 to August 3 found that 37 % of registered American voters say the Democratic Party has a better approach to the U.S. economy, compared with 36 % for the Republican Party. An additional 27 % of respondents are unsure or think another party would do a better job.

Among independents, Democrats lead Republicans by 12 percentage points. If congressional elections were held today, 42 % would vote for a Democrat and 37 % for a Republican.

President Donald Trump’s approval rating fell to 35 %, down from 37 % in the previous month’s poll. The decline coincides with a rise in gasoline prices of more than 25 % since the U.S.–Israeli strikes on Iran in February, adding roughly $1 per gallon to the cost of fuel.

The poll’s findings suggest a shift in voter sentiment that could affect the November midterm elections and control of Congress.
