A poll commissioned by The Economist and YouGov and conducted from 25‑27 July surveyed 1,559 U.S. adults aged 18 and over. Respondents were asked whether the United States should arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu under the International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant issued on 21 November 2024 for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza, together with former defence minister Yoav Gallant. Forty‑nine percent said the United States should arrest Netanyahu, 27 percent opposed and 23 percent were undecided. The same poll found that 47 percent consider Netanyahu guilty of war crimes, 24 percent say he is not guilty and 29 percent are unsure, while 43 percent believe genocide is occurring in Palestine. Partisan divisions were stark: about two‑thirds of Democrats supported the arrest versus roughly one‑quarter of Republicans. The ICC asserts jurisdiction over alleged crimes in the Palestinian territories even though the United States is not a party to the Rome Statute. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani initially announced the city would act under its laws to detain Netanyahu if he attended the U.N. General Assembly, but later retracted, stating only the federal government can enforce the warrant.
