US public opinion split on arresting Israeli PM Netanyahu
A July 25‑27 poll by The Economist and YouGov surveyed 1,559 American adults about the International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Forty‑nine percent said the United States should arrest him if he enters the country, 27 % opposed the move and 23 % were unsure. Forty‑seven percent think Netanyahu is guilty of war crimes in Gaza, with a sharp partisan divide – 68 % of Democrats support the arrest compared with 24 % of Republicans.
The ICC issued the warrant in November 2024 for Netanyahu and former defence minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity. The United States is not a party to the Rome Statute that created the court and does not recognise its jurisdiction. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani initially announced the city could detain Netanyahu during his planned September appearance at the UN General Assembly, but later retracted, stating that only the federal government has the legal authority to enforce the ICC warrant.
The poll reflects a broader erosion of U.S. support for Israel, with growing negative views of Netanyahu and increasing criticism of Israel’s conduct in Gaza.
