US postpones $14 billion Taiwan arms sale to free ammunition for Iran operation

The United States has placed a temporary hold on a $14 billion foreign military sale to Taiwan to ensure sufficient ammunition stocks for a planned operation against Iran, referred to as “Epic Fury.” Acting U.S. Navy Secretary Hung Cao told Congress the pause is to guarantee readiness for the Iran‑related mission, with the sale to resume once the operation is concluded or when the administration deems it appropriate.

Taiwan’s presidential office said it has not received any official notice of a change to the agreement, and President Donald Trump has not yet committed to the sale, prompting concerns over Washington’s support for Taipei amid rising Chinese pressure. Trump has indicated he will discuss the matter with Chinese President Xi Jinping but has made no firm commitment.
