U.S. Powdered Milk Imports Undermine Dairy Farms in Tamaulipas, Mexico

Importers have increased shipments of powdered milk from the United States, creating a major price challenge for local dairy producers in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. José Guerrero Gamboa, president of the Regional Livestock Union of Tamaulipas, said the competition has forced several dairy barns to shut down and has curtailed sector expansion.

Despite the market pressure, recent rains have revived pastures across the region, offering an opportunity to bolster milk production. Guerrero Gamboa noted that while many ranchers have shifted toward raising calves for export because of higher margins, the improved forage conditions could help diversify and revive the local dairy industry.
