US Power Grid Faces Growing Demand from Induction Cooking and Appliance Eco Modes
Electricity demand in the United States is projected to rise sharply, with forecasters estimating an additional 38,000 megawatts of peak load over the next five years – roughly the output of another California. While electric‑vehicle charging and expanding data‑center capacity have been highlighted as major drivers, analysts note that widespread adoption of induction cooktops could add a further 1.4‑2 kW per household hour, contributing noticeably to the load.
At the same time, manufacturers of washing machines and dishwashers report that “eco” operating modes lower instantaneous power spikes by extending cycle times. Although total energy consumption drops, the longer runtimes can increase mechanical wear and affect maintenance costs. Both trends are prompting utilities, regulators, and appliance makers to reassess grid readiness and compliance with tightening energy‑efficiency standards.
