US Power Grid Faces Record Demand from Heatwaves and Data Centers

The United States’ largest power grid has reported a new consumption record as extreme summer temperatures above 38 °C coincide with rapidly rising electricity use by data centers, especially those supporting artificial‑intelligence workloads. Heat‑driven air‑conditioning spikes and the cooling needs of these facilities are pushing peak loads beyond historical levels, testing operators’ ability to maintain reliability.

While total generating capacity has grown, the mix is shifting toward intermittent renewables and battery storage, which reduces the system’s flexibility during evening demand peaks. Additional stresses include drought‑limited hydropower, wildfire threats to transmission lines, and the need for emergency demand‑management tools such as temporary curtailments of large industrial users. Grid planners warn that overlapping risks could lead to localized outages, price spikes, or the need for costly reserve capacity, even though widespread blackouts are not deemed imminent.
