Missouri Supreme Court blocks new congressional map for November elections
The Missouri Supreme Court has unanimously blocked a new Republican-backed congressional map from being used in the upcoming November midterm elections. The court ruled that a citizen-led referendum petition, which gathered over 300,000 signatures, is legally sufficient and effectively suspends the new map pending a statewide vote.
As a result, Missouri must revert to its previous congressional district lines for the November general election. The new map, which was used during the August primary, was designed to potentially increase Republican representation from six to seven of the state's eight congressional seats, specifically targeting districts such as Democratic Rep. Emanuel Cleaver’s Kansas City-based seat.
Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway has filed an emergency appeal with the U.S. Supreme Court, characterizing the state court's decision as a ‘constitutional crisis’ and arguing that switching maps between a primary and a general election creates unprecedented electoral chaos. Republican officials, including Secretary of State Denny Hoskins and Governor Mike Kehoe, expressed disappointment, while former President Donald Trump criticized the ruling on social media. The state has requested a resolution from federal judges before September 14 to ensure the timely distribution of ballots to military and overseas voters.
