US President Donald Trump announces Iran talks and Greenland security deal

During the UN General Assembly in New York, US President Donald Trump announced that US and Iranian officials held a three-hour meeting on Tuesday. The discussions, facilitated by Pakistan and Qatar, included US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. While specific details were not released, the talks focused on potential agreements. Iranian state media reported that Iranian representatives presented conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, including the lifting of US maritime blockades, the unfreezing of Iranian assets, and an end to hostilities on all fronts.

Separately, President Trump signed a security agreement with Denmark regarding Greenland. The deal allows the United States to modernize and expand its presence at the Pituffik base and potentially establish new defense zones in Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig. The agreement provides for broad US military mobility across Greenland, including underwater access, and stipulates that non-NATO countries cannot establish permanent military objects on the island. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated the agreement recognizes Danish sovereignty and Greenlandic self-determination.
