US President signs funding extension and delays hemp restrictions

President Donald Trump has signed the Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act, 2027, extending federal government funding until December 11. This legislative move also provides a temporary reprieve for the hemp industry by postponing several federal restrictions that were originally set to take effect on November 12.

The postponed regulations, stemming from Section 781 of a previous appropriations law, involve a new definition of hemp based on total THC content, including THCA. The U.S. Hemp Roundtable estimates that these rules would have removed approximately 95% of current hemp products from the market.

The new deadline for these hemp restrictions coincides with the expiration of the current funding resolution. Consequently, if Congress fails to reach a new agreement by December 11, the hemp industry will face regulatory changes simultaneously with a potential government shutdown. The funding extension was passed with bipartisan support in the House, aimed at avoiding a shutdown before the midterm elections.
