US President Trump seeks $88 billion extra funding for Iran war costs
President Donald Trump asked Congress for nearly $88 billion in additional funding, with the bulk intended to cover costs of the war with Iran. The White House budget director Russell Vought wrote to House Speaker Mike Johnson urging swift action on what he called “important and urgent requests.”
The request includes about $67 billion for Pentagon needs – roughly $21 billion for ammunition and other military capabilities, $17.3 billion for operational expenses and $12.1 billion for classified programs. Additional allocations call for $768 million for the Energy Department to address nuclear and energy security issues related to Iran, $300 million for the State Department to fund embassy security and construction in countries around Iran, as well as funds for U.S. farmers, Ebola response in the Central African Republic and local infrastructure projects. The proposal was submitted a day after Congress passed a symbolic resolution urging Trump to end U.S. hostilities against Iran unless lawmakers explicitly approve further military action.
