Trump urges European allies to release diesel reserves to stabilize global prices

The Trump administration is pressuring European allies to release strategic diesel reserves to combat soaring global fuel prices. President Donald Trump indicated that Washington may request these releases to stabilize markets, following concerns over supply disruptions caused by conflicts in Russia and the Middle East.

Simultaneously, the US is considering a potential ban on diesel exports to prioritize domestic supply and lower costs for American consumers ahead of the November midterm elections. This possibility has prompted significant concern among European officials. EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic warned that such a ban would be unexpected and could have detrimental economic consequences for Europe.

In response, several European nations, including France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, and the United Kingdom, are coordinating their efforts. UK ministers have held discussions with the European Commission and other allies to determine whether to draw down emergency stockpiles. While Europe produces a large portion of its own diesel, experts warn that a loss of US supply could drive up global market prices and impact domestic pump costs.
