US prosecutors move to dismiss case against labor leader David Huerta
Federal prosecutors in Los Angeles filed a motion to dismiss the criminal case against David Huerta, president of Service Employees International Union (SEIU) California. Huerta was arrested in June 2025 while documenting an immigration raid in Los Angeles and was initially charged with felony conspiracy to impede a federal officer, later reduced to a misdemeanor obstruction charge. The U.S. Attorney’s Office said the dismissal will be final if Huerta continues to comply with his pre‑trial release terms, expecting the case to be closed by the end of next month. Huerta’s lawyers argued the prosecution had no legal basis and was intended to silence critics of the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown. The filing seeks dismissal without prejudice, with a possible stipulation for dismissal with prejudice by Aug. 31, 2026. This case is part of a broader DOJ effort that has pursued more than 100 protest‑related prosecutions since the administration’s immigration raids.
