U.S. prosecutors oppose release of Cilia Flores
Federal prosecutors in New York have filed a 28-page opposition to the release of Cilia Flores, the former Venezuelan first lady, arguing she poses an “extreme flight risk.” Flores is currently in federal custody in Manhattan facing charges of conspiracy to commit narcoterrorism.
The prosecution contends that Flores’s release could jeopardize the safety of witnesses and victims. They argue that she could use her resources to coordinate acts of intimidation, including kidnappings, beatings, and murders, to protect illicit operations. Prosecutors also revealed that they expect to call “multiple cooperating witnesses” who can provide firsthand accounts of her direct involvement in criminal activities and violence.
Flores’s defense has requested house arrest, citing health concerns such as heart conditions and weight loss, and has proposed private security monitoring. However, the government maintains that no combination of electronic monitoring or private security can mitigate the risks she poses. A hearing to determine her detention status is scheduled for October 8.
