US public opinion turns against Iran war as casualties rise

A July 2024 AP‑NORC poll found that about two‑thirds of American adults say the war with Iran has not been worth it, with only 28% approving President Donald Trump’s handling of the conflict. Support among Republicans has slipped to roughly 61% from 71% in June, while overall approval of Trump sits at 33%.

The war, which began on 28 February 2026, has resulted in 18–20 U.S. service members killed and more than 600 wounded, according to the Department of Defense’s updated casualty reporting system. The fighting has also destabilised global oil markets, pushing fuel prices higher and contributing to an inflation rate of about 3.5%, above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target, tightening household budgets across the United States.
